Just an Ordinary Day

I know full well that I am not always at my best at work.  Working in the service industry has its highs and lows but today I am in the simple state of happiness over the fact that I had a good day.  Not in the sense that I made a lot of money, but in the sense that I felt the satisfaction of happy customers and feeling on top of everything and keeping it all straight.  I am still kinda new to being a server and the lunch rush usually gets to me.  I can get flustered and forget things and not pay attention as well as I should.  Usually a table gets forgotten for a couple extra minutes or I get a food order wrong but today it all ran like clock-work.  I felt on top of my game.  I know it may sound silly but I truly believe in rejoicing in the little things in life.  It is important to me to do the best I can and when that is not possible to simply do the best I know.  My life isn't all that complicated right now.  I am rehearsing for a show (we open next week!).  I am getting ready for my brother's visit.  I have a big audition coming up in two weeks.  I pulled my back out yesterday and am trying to get over a slight cold.  Life is just fine but I like to find the extraordinary in the ordinary.  Today that means being excited for a job well done.  Sometimes I find comfort in these lyrics from Candide but today I rejoice in the simple truth of them.  The simple things in life are the ones that make it extraordinary.

And let us try,
Before we die,
To make some sense of life.
We're neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We'll do the best we know.
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow.

Let dreamers dream
What worlds they please
Those Edens can't be found.
The sweetest flowers,
The fairest trees
Are grown in solid ground.

We're neither pure, nor wise, nor good
We'll do the best we know.
We'll build our house and chop our wood
And make our garden grow.
And make our garden grow!
